Dunking for droplets: Long‐jawed spider (Araneae, Tetragnathidae ) bungees on silk line to collect water droplet from pond using its mouthparts

چکیده
Many animals have been documented to collect and subsequently transport water for several purposes besides self-hydration. However, there are few examples where this process involves the use of external body surfaces. Herein, we report on a long-jawed spider from Tetragnatha genus using its enlarged jaws (chelicerae) water. Field observations revealed descending silk line surface collecting large droplet between jaws, which was transported prey item wrapped in within web. As spiders feed via extra-oral digestion, hypothesize that collected replenish lost during previous feeding event or rehydrate current aid nutrient extraction consumption. While serve mating, our observation suggests they can also be exploited carrying liquids. This appears first case foraging subsequent among spiders, revealing novel behaviour group.

The female genital morphology of the spiders in the araneoid genus Agriognatha (Tetragnathidae) is described and illustrated. The female genitalia of Agriognatha is characterized by a strong reduction of the sperm storage organs (spermathecae) and by the presence of a specialized distal compartment of the median membranous chamber that functions as a sperm storage organ (the posterior sac). The...

متن کاملRapid colour change by the spider, Tylorida striata (Thorell, 1877) (Araneae: Tetragnathidae)
Although it has been known since the 19th century that the tetragnathid spider Tylorida striata has the capability of rapidly changing colour, descriptions of this to date have been limited to simply noting that it darkens in response to disturbance. The process of rapid colour change by this species is described here formally, both qualitatively and quantitatively, for the first time. Submerge...

Spiders are poorly studied in Iran, based on the latest studies the spider fauna of Iran includes 394 species in 126 genera belonging to 36 families. Considering the climatic and geographical variation of Iran, it can be assumed that Iran has a rich spider fauna compared to the adjacent countries. The present study seeks to take a new step in the ongoing active research of Iranian spider fauna....

Some things about spider silk are difficult to understand. The genetic code for one of the more perplexing types of silk—the strands spiders use to weave their egg cases. Each case must be tough enough to keep out parasites, impermeable to rain and fungus, and breathable while insulating eggs from temperature extremes. These qualities alone would make an impressive fabric. The egg cases may even ...
